History

The Microbial Pathogenesis and Host Defense Program was started in 1998 by Drs. Joanne Engel and Eric Brown.  Dr. Engel has served as director until 2018, when she and Dr. Anita Sil became co-directors.  Dr. Engel has also served as the Chief of the Infectious Disease Division since 2005.  Dr. Sil serves as the co-Director of the the BMS Graduate Program and is the Chair of the Microbiology & Immunology department.  Reflecting the tremendous growth of Microbiology, the program evolved into the current Integrative Microbiology (iMicro) program in 2018.  Together, Drs. Engel and Sil are well-positioned to integrate iMicro with many other programs at UCSF.
